Who we are

The Bamboo and Rattan Association of Tanzania (BARATA) is a non-profit organization that was established in 2004. Its main aim is to promote the use of bamboo and rattan as a means of promoting environmentally sustainable development in Tanzania. BARATA works towards achieving this by providing technical assistance, training, and information on the sustainable management and utilization of bamboo and rattan resources.

Bamboo and rattan are some of the fastest-growing plants on earth and are known for their numerous uses in various sectors such as agriculture, construction, furniture making, and handicrafts. They are also environmentally sustainable as they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen. BARATA recognizes the potential of bamboo and rattan as a tool for sustainable development and seeks to promote their use in various industries to help reduce the pressure on natural forests and protect the environment.

BARATA’s primary activities include organizing capacity building and training programs for rural communities, farmers, and entrepreneurs on the sustainable management and utilization of bamboo and rattan resources. This is done through workshops, demonstrations, and the provision of training materials. BARATA also carries out research on bamboo and rattan to identify their potential applications, the best ways to grow them, and how to add value to the finished products.

Furthermore, BARATA collaborates with other organizations, institutions, and government agencies to promote the development and use of bamboo and rattan in Tanzania. These collaborations help to foster innovation and the exchange of ideas and information, which in turn helps to create a sustainable bamboo and rattan industry in Tanzania.

BARATA’s efforts have resulted in the establishment of several bamboo and rattan-based enterprises in Tanzania. These enterprises create employment opportunities and provide income for local communities, while also promoting sustainable development. Additionally, BARATA’s initiatives have helped to reduce deforestation in Tanzania by providing alternative sources of wood for fuel and construction.

The Bamboo and Rattan Association of Tanzania (BARATA) is social distinguished organization that promotes environmentally sustainable development using bamboo and rattan in Tanzania and beyond. Its activities include capacity building, research, and collaboration with other organizations to promote the development and use of bamboo and rattan in Tanzania.
