BARATA is a non-profit organization established in 2004 with a mission to promote the sustainable use and management of bamboo and rattan resources in Tanzania. We believe that bamboo and rattan can contribute to environmental protection, economic development, and social wellbeing, and we are committed to promoting their use in various sectors.
Our Focus: Promoting Sustainable Development with Bamboo and Rattan
Bamboo and rattan are some of the fastest-growing plants on earth, with numerous uses in agriculture, construction, furniture making, and handicrafts. They also absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen, making them environmentally sustainable. BARATA recognizes the potential of bamboo and rattan as a tool for sustainable development and seeks to promote their use in various industries to help reduce the pressure on natural forests and protect the environment.
Our Activities: Capacity Building, Research, and Collaboration
To achieve our mission, BARATA organizes capacity building and training programs for rural communities, farmers, and entrepreneurs on the sustainable management and utilization of bamboo and rattan resources. We also carry out research on bamboo and rattan to identify their potential applications, the best ways to grow them, and how to add value to the finished products. Furthermore, we collaborate with other organizations, institutions, and government agencies to promote the development and use of bamboo and rattan in Tanzania, fostering innovation and the exchange of ideas and information.

Our mission is to promote the sustainable use and management of bamboo and rattan resources in Tanzania. We aim to empower rural communities, farmers, and entrepreneurs with the knowledge and skills they need to manage and utilize these resources in sustainable ways that promote environmental protection, economic development, and social wellbeing. To achieve our mission, we provide technical assistance, training, and information, promote the development of value chains for bamboo and rattan products, advocate for policies and regulations that promote sustainable management, undertake research and development activities, and collaborate with other organizations, institutions, and government agencies that share our vision and mission.
